Will the UK Government Introduce New Plastic Taxes?
4th December 2017
In November’s budget, the Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond said he would work with the Environment Secretary Michael Gove to investigate how the tax system and charges on single use plastics could reduce waste.
After the introduction of the carrier bag charge in 2015, sales of single use plastic carrier bags have reduced by 84%, which shows that levies can have an effect, but it is not a foregone conclusion that a similar scheme for disposable plastics, such as takeaway coffee cups, would have a similar affect.
This announcement is a step forward and we will be monitoring any developments in plastic taxes going forwards.
