Packaging Recycling Targets: DEFRA Consults Industry
24th March 2016
DEFRA has published a consultation regarding the potential amendment of the plastic and glass packaging recycling business targets for 2016-2020. Those businesses and bodies affected by the Packaging Waste Regulations have been invited to give their responses.
A recent market report found that there has been much less plastic packaging placed on the market than was estimated when the targets were set in 2011/12. This means that the targets for businesses can be lowered, while maintaining a similar recycling rate.
The current plastic targets are 52% for 2016 and 57% for 2017; the Government’s preferred option is to reduce the 2016 target to 49% for 2016, and then increase by 2% each year until 2020.
The current glass target is 77% for 2016 and 2017; the options are to remain at 77% until 2020, or to increase by 1% a year from 2018-2020.
The consultation has now closed, and the Government’s response is expected in the Spring.
