EPR Fee Audit

An independent audit of your packaging data that finds and removes the EPR fees you shouldn't be paying.

Services

Most producers pay EPR fees on more packaging than they actually owe. The cause is usually the data, not the regulation: supplier default weights instead of measured ones, materials booked in the wrong category, packaging that was exported or sold B2B but never deducted. The EPR Fee Audit finds those errors, corrects them, and shows which pack changes would move you into a lower fee band.

  • Over 80%Lower EPR obligation for a construction equipment manufacturer, from £1.4m to £250k
  • £1mSaved by a supermarket chain through product reclassification
  • 4m+SKUs with packaging metrics in our database, used to check your data

What does the EPR Fee Audit include?

Two things, delivered together. First, we audit your packaging data line by line against what you should be declaring. Then we act on what we find: correcting the declaration and advising on the pack changes that lower your fees from here on.

Part 1 · Audit

  • 01

    Data audit

Supplier weights, material classification, primary/secondary/shipment splits, exports and B2B deductions, checked against our database of 4m+ SKUs.

  • 02

    RAM and modulation review

The RAG rating of each pack under the Recyclability Assessment Methodology, and what sitting in the wrong band costs you.

Part 2 · Reduction

  • 03

    Fee correction

A corrected obligation, with the evidence behind every change, ready for submission.

  • 04

    Reduction plan

The specific pack changes (material, weight, format) that would move packaging into a lower fee band, ranked by saving.

Where do producers usually overpay?

In four places, and almost always in the data rather than the rules:

  1. Supplier default weights used instead of measured weights.
  2. Materials misclassified, for example a laminate booked in the wrong polymer band.
  3. Packaging exported or sold B2B that was never deducted from the obligation.
  4. Primary, secondary and shipment packaging split wrongly across the return.

Every tonne over-declared is paid for again every year, so a few percentage points of error is a recurring cost, not a one-off.

Independent

How is this different from a compliance scheme?

A compliance scheme takes on your obligation and discharges it. We don't. Ecoveritas works alongside whichever scheme or direct registration you use, and makes sure the number you hand them is right.

That independence matters for this service in particular. Ecoveritas holds no PRN book, no waste contracts and no compliance scheme, so we have no commercial interest in the size of your obligation. We earn from the number being right and from it coming down.

What Ecoveritas holds

  • No PRN book
  • No waste contracts
  • No compliance scheme

Our only interest: the number being right, and coming down.

Who is the EPR Fee Audit for?

Large retailers, brands and FMCG producers with a significant packaging bill, especially those with many SKUs, many suppliers or obligations in more than one market. If your packaging is simple and your volumes are small, our self-serve reporting may be a better fit: my.ecoveritas.

How do you measure the saving?

Against your own baseline. We take what you declared (or would have declared) before the audit, apply the corrections, and price the difference at the published fee rates for the same period. Pack-change savings are shown separately, because they depend on changes you choose to make.

  1. Your baselineWhat you declared before the audit
  2. Corrected obligationOnce the data is right
  3. Published fee ratesSame period, no estimates
  4. Your savingThe difference, in pounds

Pack-change savings are shown separately.

What does it cost?

Every audit is scoped to the producer, so we don't publish a rate card. Price is driven by four things: packaging tonnage, number of markets, SKU volume and reporting frequency. We'll give you a fixed scope and price before any work starts.

  • Packaging tonnage
  • Number of markets
  • SKU volume
  • Reporting frequency

Which regulations does it cover?

UK packaging EPR (pEPR), including RAM modulation, plus the Plastic Packaging Tax. For producers in other markets, the same audit applies to global EPR in 80+ countries and to preparation for the EU PPWR.
